Getting your Home Ready for Termite Treatment (Part-1)

One of the advantages of entrusting a termite control project to a professional company is that they will tell you what you need to do to protect your home, health and possessions as and when the project begins. The whole process becomes much simpler if you are fully aware of the preparatory work you need to do before the termite control team arrives. The specifics might vary, depending on the type of treatment and the procedures that the team follows.

There are non-fumigation and microwave termite control processes too that are available today. These methods have no need for harmful chemicals. You are thus spared of exposure to the danger of such chemicals. The bother of pre-treatment preparation as well is greatly reduced.

It would be best to leave the choice of the treatment procedure to the professionals. They know very well what termite control technique is right for your home to ensure a complete solution to your problems. Here are the basics of pre-treatment preparation that needs to be done.

Clear access

Termites and other pests tend to congregate in corners. Remove all heavy furniture and other objects that may block access to corners and other difficult termite habitats.  This will make it easier for the experts to do a thorough job. In addition, those items of furniture and objects will be protected from any accidental spilling of chemicals that could cause damage.

Clothes and personal effects

Put away safely everything that your skin might come into contact. That includes clothing, cosmetics, jewelry, toys of kids and so on; do the same for towels, bed linen and other fabrics. Any chemicals that may be absorbed by all these things could cause an unpleasant reaction on your skin.

The best way to protect all your personal effects is to wrap them in plastic, put them in cabinets or closets and, if possible, seal the gaps in the drawers and doors with tape. Do not use masking tape or similar ones as they are made of paper and could absorb the chemicals in the air.

Furniture

Cover your tables, chairs, sofas and the rest of the furniture with plastic sheets that can protect wood, metal or fabric from chemical stains or other forms of damage. Such plastic is the best wrapping material you can use safely, since cloth sheets may absorb the chemicals. Be prepared to empty out the drawers and other storage areas from wooden furniture if the termite control company asks you to: these are nice havens for the pests to hide.

Bathrooms

It is strongly advisable to completely empty out the bathrooms because this is where toiletries, cosmetics, towels, cleaning materials etc. are stored. It is necessary to protect especially toothbrushes, soaps, razors, and such things from the termite control chemicals.

There are a few more steps of preparation to be followed before the fumigation process begins. The next part of this blog post will cover these steps.
