Formosan Subterranean Termites

According to experts, more termite swarms may keep coming at least until the end of June. As soon as the weather gets a little moist, these termites will take refuge at homes all around your city.

In this post, we will talk about Formosan termites and how to get rid of them before they damage your home.

Some Fact Checks about Formosan Subterranean Termites

Even though termite swarming is considered normal in most US states, they create a massive mess by destroying the home structure and wooden stuff worth millions of dollars every year.  These termites crawl through the tiny cracks of wooden walls, floors, and ceilings and start feeding on them.

During the spring-summer season, swarms of Formosan termites make the matter worse. They have habits similar to eastern subterranean termites. These termites build huge underground colonies that comprise 350,000 workers on average and build mud tube structures from the soil and wood.

Queen Formosan termites can lay more than 1,000 eggs per day. These termites create new colonies by swarming to other locations. Usually, swarming happens in the evening hours, especially after wet, rainy days. Just one colony of Formosan termites may release more than 70,000 swarmers.

Formosans termites are quite aggressive, and that is why they got the name "super termites." A colony may have 10 million termites, and each can eat 13 ounces of wood a day. It means all these termites can devour a house in nearly three months.

During the swarming season, keep your porch lights on so that you check around your house to find out where the termites are trying to get in or already nesting.
